Black and White is a nice alternative to color photography and can really lend a visually striking appeal. Since we see the world in color, a monotone image can lend an almost otherworldly quality.
Sometimes the sole reason for taking a photograph is to capture the beautiful colors in a scene. Other times we want to focus on form, contrast, and tonality; this is when B&W really shines. Simplicity is a good thing in photography, an image should engage and entice the viewer directly to the subject, mood, and emotions conveyed.
Color, while often beautiful, can actually be a major distraction for the viewer and photographer. In photography, when something is slightly off, it affects the entire experience of the viewer. Our eyes are incredibly receptive and discriminating, colors that don’t look quite right can be very unappealing at times. Vibrant colors in a scene that are not the main focus can cause an image to appear disjointed.
Black and White images have a classic, romantic, and dignified appeal. The images cause the viewer to see a new world, one we cannot see with the naked eye.
